Temple B'nai Brith and Healey School
Tutor Team Leader: Darlene Matthews
Principal and School Liaison: Michael Sabin
Entering its fifth year as part of the Greater Boston Jewish Coalition for Literacy, Temple B'nai Brith's team consists of ten members. Of those tutors, six are members of the temple, and four are Somerville residents with a passion for volunteering. Two tutors have been a part of the team since its beginning, watching it grow to its current size. The team volunteers at the Arthur D. Healey School in Somerville.
The tutors love working with the students, who range from kindergarten to second grade. Many of the tutors are working with the same students as last year, having followed the class from 1st to 2nd grade. Each volunteer works one-one-one with students for about 45 minutes per week. One tutor even works with two students, making the team’s total contribution to the school about 8 hours per week of volunteer service. When asked about their experiences, tutors have nothing but rave reviews of the school, students, and teachers they work with.
At the start of the 2009-2010 school year, Somerville Public Schools invited the GBJCL to facilitate their volunteer training for the school year! All of Somerville's literacy volunteers were trained by GBJCL Director Sheera Sadja at the Kennedy School. The training was taped to be used in future years.
