One Family Initiative
The One Family initiative is a synagogue social justice program that engages synagogues in meaningful partnerships with community-based organizations focusing on the issue of family homelessness. JCRC’s involvement in this initiative began in response to the growing homelessness crisis in Massachusetts and the passion and commitment of area synagogues to work to end family homelessness in our state.
JCRC works closely with One Family, Inc., created by Paul and Phyllis Fireman and Family, to find creative solutions to end family homelessness as we know it, to involve synagogues in this initiative in ways that are meaningful and tailored to their needs. Synagogues select action opportunities to engage their synagogues in fighting family homelessness – from partnering with a local family shelter, to developing a supportive partnership with a homeless family that is making strides towards self-sufficiency, to participating in local advocacy efforts to provide more affordable housing, and more.
Synagogue members develop leadership, organizing, and advocacy skills to build the power needed to truly end family homelessness. They engage in synagogue-wide education campaigns on issues of family homelessness through speaking engagements by formerly homeless people, lessons in religious schools, and other educational programs.
Through individual work, consultation, and training and networking opportunities, JCRC helps synagogue leaders develop the skills to build strong partnerships with family homelessness partners, enhance the congregational volunteer base, incorporate Jewish learning into action opportunities, and build the power to have a real impact on this issue.
