Greater Boston Synagogue Organizing Project
The Greater Boston Synagogue Organizing Project (GBSOP) grew out of JCRC's work with three area synagogues: Temple Emanuel in Newton, Temple Isaiah in Lexington, and Congregation Beth El in Sudbury. Between 2002 and 2004, leaders from these synagogues worked with JCRC and were mentored by leaders from Temple Israel in Boston to learn about broad based community organizing. With the support of each participating congregation, JCRC, the Jewish Fund for Justice and other funders, GBSOP hired a full-time organizer, Meir Lakein, in the summer of 2004, to support and sustain their community organizing work.
The congregations involved in GBSOP have been engaging in individual organizing efforts. The congregations have collaborated through joint meetings of key synagogue leaders for training and support, meetings among rabbis, representation on the GBSOP Advisory Board and joint training. GBSOP continues to sponsor regular meetings among the leaders and rabbis from the participating synagogues, as well as events to bring together broader groups from the synagogues twice a year. Together with JCRC, GBSOP will encourage the connection of congregations throughout the community to synagogue based organizing by connecting them with broad based community organizations, supporting each other’s campaigns and providing mentoring to newer congregations in their organizing efforts.
