Jewish Big Brother and Big Sister/Starshi Brat and Starshaya Sitra Program of Dnepropetrovsk (JBBBS of Greater Boston)

With support from the Kehillah Project, the Jewish Big Brother/Big Sister program focuses on children and youth who come from circumstances in which they lack the attention of a parent – owing to death, abandonment, family dysfunction, or institutionalization.  The program serves 50 matches every year.  The boys and girls come from underprivileged homes and/or reside in the Jewish Homes for Boys or the Jewish Home for Girls.  Most have experienced concrete and devastating traumas and have received no therapeutic services.  The major premise of the program is the creation and supervision of a mentoring relationship between a caring adult volunteer and a Jewish child.  While their Homes and the Day School provide structure and shelter, these one-to-one activities with positive adults create lasting relationships and bonds that help change the objective realities of the child’s life, and develop positive strengths and skills.  The relationships between ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles’ have been extraordinarily beneficial to the children, have had a great impact on the lives of the volunteers, and have been an inspiration to the Dnepropetrovsk Jewish community. Return to Dnepropetrovsk Projects Page
