Be a Camp Counselor in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Boston has partnered with the Dnepropetrovsk Jewish Community to rekindle Jewish Life in Ukraine and to build connections between our communities.  This coming summer, our partnership will run an English Immersion Camp at the Or Avner Day School in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. Campers and Camp Staff
There will be about 70 campers (up to 10 years old) from the school and about six U.S. counselors. In the mornings, the children will study with the Day School English teachers. After these lessons, the children will be in camp activities with the U.S. counselors. Day School non-English teachers will be available to accompany the camp groups. There will also be two U.S. master teachers in Teaching English as a Second Language who will work with the Dnepropetrovsk English teachers and serve as a resource for the camp counselors.

Location
Music, sports, theatre, and art and crafts activities will be held at the Day School. In addition, there will be trips to places such as bowling alleys and museums.

Camp hours
Monday – Thursday: 8 AM - 4 PM
Friday: 8 AM – 1 PM

Camper Counselor Roles and Activities

During the hours that children are with the English teachers, camp counselors will

  • Familiarize themselves with what is being taught, either by spending some time in the classes or reviewing the concepts/words being taught each day
  • Debrief the previous day's camp
  • Plan camp activities, including music, theater, arts, and sports, in which children will practice what they have been learning in the classes
  • Have meetings with the U.S. master teachers on strategies for teaching English as a Second Language

During the camp activities, camp counselors will

  • Lead the camp activities they have planned
  • Have children speak only English and use the English taught in the classes
  • Be the counselors on any trips planned by the school, such as going to a bowling aisle or skating rink

Non-camp activities (during some mornings, evenings, and weekends)

  • Volunteer service at other organizations such as the Beit Baruch Assisted Living Facility for the Elderly, the Educational Resource Center for Special Needs Children, and the Children's Home
  • Meetings with other organizations such as Big Brother/Big Sister and the Microenterprise Initiative Loan Program
  • Meetings with Dnepropretrovsk Jewish community leaders and community members, including college students and young adults
  • Shabbat services at the Golden Rose Synagogue
  • Tours of the Dnepropretrovsk area

Airfare and Accommodations

  • Stipends will cover round-trip Boston-Dnepropretrovsk airfare
  • Counselors will stay with Dnepropretrovsk families
  • On camp days, breakfast and lunch will be provided at the Day School
