As part of the CJP’s Boston-Haifa partnership, JCRC created an Ethiopian Jewry Committee seven years ago. The committee in Boston is currently chaired by Peter Barrer. The sister committee in Haifa is currently chaired by Eshetu Kebede.

The goals of the committees are four-fold: First, to develop programs and initiatives to improve life for Ethiopians Israelis in Haifa; second, to educate the Boston community on issues pertaining to Ethiopian Jews in Ethiopia and in Haifa; third, to advocate for the Falas Muras in Boston and Israel; and fourth, to utilize a sale of handmade crafts made by Ethiopian Israeli women from Haifa as a means to tell the story of the Ethiopian Jews.

JCRC has been an outspoken advocate of Ethiopian Jews for over two decades since their arrival in Israel in the 1980s. Today, JCRC seeks to facilitate the absorption of the Ethiopian community into Israeli society and secure a better life for Ethiopian families. JCRC, with the cooperation of the Boston-Haifa Ethiopian Jewry Committee, administers projects in the fields of education, employment, family and community well-being, integration, and empowerment, both in Haifa and in the Boston area. Our activity is grounded in the following three principles:

  1. Promote leadership within the Ethiopian Israeli Community and empower Ethiopians in decision-making.
  2. Increase family and community independence and improve education and economic security.
  3. Enhance integration of the Ethiopian community into Israeli society and of veteran Israelis into Ethiopian activities.
