Employment
Before Shiluvim, only 40% of the Ethiopian Israelis in Haifa (aged 21-55) were employed. After three years of Shiluvim, 84% are now employed (Shiluvim data). The employment program helps individuals find jobs, works with employers, and arranges for/ provides training courses.
Job Placements
A Shiluvim employment coordinator in each of the three area mokdim works with individuals to identify skills, develop resumes, and prepare for interviews. The employment coordinators work with employers to identify open positions and arrange for interviews. As needed, the coordinators provide on-the-job cultural mediation.
Courses/Workshops
Shiluvim has arranged for and provided subsidies for courses such as childcare workers, seniors' caretakers, truck driving, house renovations, and CNC (computer numerical controlled machine tools). Shiluvim recently starting working with Kupat Holim (family medical clinics and hospitals) to arrange for community members to take courses for becoming hospital aides, medical secretaries, and pharmacy assistants. In addition, Shiluvim provides "preparation for the world of work" workshops. Shiluvim recently started a monthly "employment club" with talks on various subjects.
Ulpan
Shiluvim has started Hebrew language courses with an emphasis on work-related Hebrew. There are 60 participants.
