Send page to a Friend There has been an uninterrupted Jewish presence in the Middle East and North Africa since the sixth century BCE. In the 1940s, approximately 1,000,000 Jews lived in the Middle East and North Africa. Today there are roughly 5,000.  Most fled to Israel, and others to the United States.
