We at the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston join all our brothers and sisters in Israel in mourning the loss of Former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, who devoted his life to serving the State of Israel and the Jewish people.

Prime Minister Shamir is well known for establishing diplomatic relations between Israel and several dozen African, Asian, and other countries. He was a strong advocate for Soviet Jews and considered his efforts to bring thousands of Ethiopian Jews to Israel in Operation Moses as his most important achievement as Prime Minister. Given JCRC’s ongoing work both with Ethiopian Israelis and with Jews in the Former Soviet Union, we are particularly grateful for this portion of his legacy.

We celebrate the life of Yitzhak Shamir, who we will always remember as a fierce defender of Israel, fighting tirelessly to ensure that all Jews have a homeland where they can live in safety and harmony. May his memory be for a blessing.
