Jewish Community Responds to Indictments of White Supremacists

(Boston - June 20, 2001) The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston (JCRC) issued the following statement today regarding the indictment of two white supremacists in connection with a suspected plot to bomb Jewish sites in the Greater Boston area, including the NE Holocaust Memorial.

"We are shocked and profoundly disturbed by the arrest today of two white supremacists who were allegedly conspiring to blow up property with a perceived Jewish or African-American association. We applaud the combined efforts of local, state and federal officials who successfully apprehended the suspects.  It is hard to imagine how or why anyone in our society would be so filled with hate that they would target the Jewish memory of the Holocaust of any other ethnic or religious symbol. We are thankful that we live in a city and state where our leaders publicly condemn all forms of racism and bigotry."

Mel Shuman, of Friends of the New England Holocaust Memorial noted: "It is ironic that the NE Holocaust Memorial, which was built as a reminder of the consequences of hate would be a target of that very hatred.  We will continue to work to bring diverse people together to build a society where no one is persecuted for the color of their skin, their religion, sexual orientation or beliefs."
