JCRC Condemns PETA's "Holocaust on your Plate" Campaign
(Boston, MA) May 20, 2003 – Members of PETA, an animal rights activist organization, have launched a campaign likening the slaughter of animals for food to the genocide of six million Jews during the Holocaust. The Jewish Community Relations Council will hold a press conference at the New England Holocaust Memorial at Noon, Tuesday, May 20 opposing the campaign. JCRC Executive Director Nancy K. Kaufman and JCRC President Geoffrey H. Lewis issued the following statement regarding the PETA Campaign:
"This outrageous campaign trivializes the memory of the millions of innocent victims of the Holocaust and insults those who survived. While animal cruelty is an important issue, there can be no comparison with the suffering experienced by millions of people during the Holocaust. The comparison is repugnant and undermines the cause it attempts to support."
The press conference will include Holocaust survivors, City Councilor Mike Ross and representatives from local Jewish organizations. Click here to read the statement of the New England Holocaust Memorial, the Boston Globe editorial on this topic and other related materials.
