Jewish Community Relations Council Congratulates Sharon On Victory

Nancy K. Kaufman, Executive Director and Geoffrey Lewis, President of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston, issued the following statement in response to the victory of Ariel Sharon as Prime Minister of Israel:

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston congratulates Prime Minister on his re-election as Prime Minister of Israel.  We hope that Israel's new government will be able to realize the goal of peace and security for all of Israel's citizens.

The JCRC celebrates the democratic election in Israel and waits for the day when democracy will be the norm in the region, not the exception.

The current crisis between the Israelis and Palestinians poses serious challenges for the leadership of Israel.  The organized American Jewish community strongly supports the desire of Israelis to seek an end to the conflict through negotiation rather than violence.

We are hopeful that the strong, mutually supportive relationship between the U.S. and Israel will continue and that President Bush will work closely with the new Israeli government to continue that historic special collaboration in order to achieve the shared objectives of peace, security and economic growth in the Middle East.
