Boston Jewish Community Relations Council Applauds Israeli Parliament Vote For Gaza Disengagement
(Boston, October 27) Susan A. Calechman and Nancy K. Kaufman, President and Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston, released this statement today in response to yesterday's historic vote of the Israeli parliament:
"Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, supported by the Israeli government, took the boldest step yet in Israel's quest for peace and security. This move to confront the continuous onslaught of Palestinian violence with diplomacy shows immense courage on the part of the Israeli leadership and citizens.
We join the Israeli people in support of the disengagement initiative. We applaud the effort of the Israeli government to create a situation that can facilitate a negotiating process with responsible and peace-minded Palestinian leaders. We encourage U.S. leaders to embrace the opportunity presented by Israel's courageous action, and impress upon the Palestinian Authority the need to end terror and incitement of violence.
The historic vote took place on the ninth anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin's assassination, and motivates us even more to do all we can to support his unfulfilled quest for two states living side-by-side in peace and security."
