Boston Jewish Community Reacts To Overturning Of Academic Boycott Of Sister City’s University

(Boston, June 26) Nancy K. Kaufman, Executive Director and Susan A. Calechman, President of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston issued the following statement today regarding the vote of Britain's Association of University Teachers to overturn their boycott of Israel's Haifa and Bar Ilan Universities.

"We are delighted that the British academic community has seen fit to overturn this deeply flawed and biased vote.  Israeli universities exemplify the best of Israeli society, where Jews and Arabs study side by side and where dialogue and democratic values permeate the atmosphere.  We are particularly heartened that the University of Haifa, an important partner institution in Boston's sister city, has had the opportunity to show the world what it really is –an institution dedicated to civil discourse and social responsibility.

We congratulate Britain's academic community for taking this bold step in the face of a smear campaign intended to delegitimize Israel and attempt to isolate Israel among the nations. Last week's vote set the record straight – Israel is a place where open ideas and academic freedom rein and bigotry is not tolerated.
