Jewish Community Condemns Calls for Israel's Destruction and Hadera Suicide Bombing

(Boston, October 28)   — JCRC president Susan A. Calechman and Executive Director Nancy K. Kaufman issued the following statement today:

We condemn the calls for the destruction of Israel by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Wednesday's suicide bombing at a vegetable market in Hadera, Israel which killed five people and injured scores more. JCRC extends our sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the terrorist attack and pray for the full recovery of those who were wounded.

The linkage between a vicious act of cowardice and words of incitement are clear.  Islamic Jihad, a well-known terrorist organization financed by the Iranian government, perpetrated the suicide bombing and must be held accountable.

President Ahmadinejad has been widely condemned by the international community for stating that Israel "must be wiped off the map."  Indeed, Saeb Erekat, chief negotiator for the Palestinian Authority stated, "we do not accept the statements of the president of Iran."

However, words are not enough.

It is long overdue for the Islamic community and Arab states to take concrete actions to stop the destructive forces in their midst.   Specifically, we call upon Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to act decisively against terrorist groups like Islamic Jihad and Hamas, to confiscate their weapons and to take action to punish crimes.
