Jewish Community Relations Council Applauds Step to Recognize Israel’s Magen David Adom
Boston (December 9, 2005) - The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston commends the sustained diplomatic efforts by the American Red Cross (ARC) which lead to the approval in Geneva, Switzerland of a third official symbol for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Since 2000, the ARC has withheld over $35 million in dues to the Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the hope of spurring the diplomatic process that appears near fruition.
In response to the action, JCRC Executive Director Nancy K. Kaufman stated, "This act will allow Israel's Magen David Adom (MDA - Red Star of David) to be displayed along side or inside of a red crystal and should lead to its recognition as a member of the international aid organization."
Despite the efforts of the Syrian delegation to thwart the breakthrough, the international community overwhelmingly approved the addition of the symbol and the de facto recognition of MDA.
Kaufman continued, "The International Federation must take the next logical step by conferring official membership status upon Israel. Ironically, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society already completed an agreement of mutual recognition with MDA last week. It is long overdue for MDA to be recognized fully by the International Red Cross and we look forward to swift approval of Israel's inclusion."
