The Jewish Community Relations Council hosted Boston's inaugural Cape Verdean-Jewish Passover seder on Tuesday, April 4, at St. Patrick's Church in Roxbury.
Due to two waves of Jewish immigration to Cape Verde, a significant number of Cape Verdeans today proudly claim Jewish ancestry. This Passover seder, reflecting both cultures, was an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen the connections between the Jewish and Cape Verdean communities.
Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony, is a nation of 10 islands 300 miles off the coast of West Africa. The Jewish and Cape Verdean communities have much in common: histories of enslavement and liberation, far-flung diasporas, the challenges of immigration to the U.S., and heritages of prevailing over enormous hardships.
