Boston-Mayor Thomas Menino was the keynote speaker during the opening of the Oliver Hazard Perry new school library on Nov. 19. The library was made possible by dedicated volunteers from Temple Israel of Boston, the Perry School and Greater Boston Jewish Coalition for Literacy.
More than 100 students, parents and community members gathered in the library to recognize everyone who helped facilitate the project that began more than two and a half years ago when GBJCL leaders approached the Perry School with a vision to building a new library. To reach that goal, a group of 7th graders from Temple Isreal Boston, who were looking for a way to act on their commitment to tikkun olam, formed a partnership with the students from the Perry School. Together, they raised nearly $15,000 through various fundraisers.
"A library is a hospital for the mind," said Temple Israel's Rabbi Ronne Friedman as he emphasized the importance of libraries and books for strong education and personal development.
Added Nancy K. Kaufman, executive director of JCRC: "Full literacy is essential so that all children reach their potential."
The ceremony included remarks from many leaders involved in the project including Perry School Principal Mary Jane Dotson, Superintendent Michael Contampasis and Ellen Segal, chair of the GBJCL.
In future months the GBJCL plans to open additional libraries in schools across the Greater Boston area. To get invovled in this effort, contact Rachel Utain-Evans at (617) 457-8669.
