JCRC Calls on Massachusetts to Divest from Companies Supporting the Darfur Genocide
(October 13, 2006) In a resolution voted on last night, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston (JCRC) called on the Massachusetts State Legislature to enact legislation to divest from companies supporting the Darfur genocide. The legislation would direct the state's pension fund to sell shares in companies that purchase oil and other commodities from the Sudanese government or supply its military with arms. Since 2003 at least 400,000 Sudanese people have been killed and more than 2 million innocent civilians have been displaced.
Jim Segel, President of JCRC said "This is an extremely important issue. Our state should not be invested in companies which help to perpetuate genocide in Sudan."
Students Take Action Now: Darfur (STAND) and the Massachusetts Coalition to Save Darfur are leading the campaign calling for state funds to be divested from Sudan.
Representative Jay Kaufman, (D-Lexington) has drafted a bill which will be introduced again to the Legislature in January.
Rabbi Gershon Gewirtz of Young Israel of Brookline and JCRC Board member said, "Divesting from Sudan is a moral imperative. Our values demand that we fight genocide."
