JCRC Praises European Union’s Decision To Refer Iran To U.N. Security Council

(Boston, January 13, 2006) In response to the announcement by the European Union that diplomatic talks with Iran have ceased and that Iran should be brought before the UN Security Council for possible sanctions due to its nuclear program, Nancy K. Kaufman, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston (JCRC), issued the following statement.

"We view as a very positive development the European Union's decision to refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions due to its ongoing efforts to develop nuclear weapons in defiance of the international community. The safety and security of the entire world would be threatened by Iran's possession of nuclear arms.

The hateful rhetoric and vile worldview emanating from Teheran continue to remind us of the dangers that would result from Iran acquiring nuclear weapons capability.  The anti-Semitic and anti-Israel remarks voiced repeatedly by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during the past several months have greatly reinforced our concerns.

As Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stated earlier today Iran, 'has chosen confrontation with the international community.' It is now the time for the world community to act vigorously to halt Iran's nuclear program before it is too late."
