Denouncing divestment from Israeli companies, Reverend Hurmon E. Hamilton, president of the Greater Boston interfaith Organization and spiritual leader of Roxbury Presbyterian Church, addressed local community leaders at the Jewish Community Relations Council's 62nd annual meeting, which was held May 31 at Boston's Omni Parker House.
Hamilton said that he disagrees with the recent decision of the local chapter of Presbyterian Church USA to divest from Israel. "I'm here to say clearly that there are a whole lot of Presbyterians who voted against this ill-conceived action and will continue to stand against it until it is reversed," Hamilton told the audience.
In his speech, he also focused on the roll of faith-based orgainzations in promoting a recent health-care bill and asked for partnership from the Jewish community in helping to fight youth violence in Roxbury. Forcusing on partnership, Hamilton said that religious communities need to "find a way to make old rivals new partners."
