Paper should reach out

As the lead organization supporting the Somerville Coalition for Middle East Peace, JCRC's role in fighting the two anti0Israel ballot questions remains as strong as ever. Although we have secured statements of support from Congressman Mike Capuano, gubernationial candidates Deval Patrick and Kerry Healey and Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone, this campaign will be won at the grassroots level.
The coalition has mobilized students and activists who are reaching out to the people of Somerville. This week, voters will receive a mailing urging them to vote "no".
As our community knows, Israel was the victim of an unprovoked attack this summer by Hezbollah terrorists. Our sister city Haifa's citizens suffered casualties and severe emotional trauma. Since the war began we have been intensely occupied with supporting Israel and Haifa in particular and have made that effort a priority.
We are committed to defeating these ballot questions. But, they are only symbolic in nature. They are non-binding and will have no real impact on the citizens of Israel. We are devoting more of our resources to help Israel's citizens directly while supporting the grassroots efforts in Somerville.
The Advocate has done a disservice to the community by failing to reach out adequately to the coalition to find out what is really happening. The community deserves better.
