In an effort to inspire social action, Temple Shir Tikva of Wayland hosted a call for action event on Sunday, entitled "Tekia Gedolah," for which more than 200 congregants attended.
"Like the long clear sound of the Tekia Gedolah shofar, we want this call to action to ring far and wide," said Rabbi Neal Gold of Shir Tikva.
According to Gold, the morning program was a place for synagogue leaders to share their personal stories of caring for aging parents, providing guidance for children, and voicing alarm about environmental issues - the three main issues the Wayland synagogue has decided to focus its efforts on this year.
Those issues emerged out of a year-long series of meetings held in congregants' homes.
"We had house meetings to identify our main concerns through sharing personal stories," said Beth Sackstein, co-chair of social action at Shir Tikva. "This approach to community organizing really inspired action."
And it is important for Jewish spiritual homes to be at the center of community organizing, according to Elana Kogan, director of planning and leadership at the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston, which provided support for Shir Tikva leaders.
"We've seen the profound impact of synagogue organizing within the congregations and beyond; it develops leaders for all aspects of synagogue life, sustains members who crave the opportunity to express their Judaism through social justice and builds strong bonds within the synagogue community," said Kogan.
Added Sackstein: "By searching within ourselves and joining together in service opportunities to learn how to contribute our time and efforts to the community at large, we can sound the call of Tekia and bring our lives into balance by addressing these challenges that impact each of us."
