JEWISH COMMUNITY DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT PRESIDENT CARTER'S MISGUIDED APPROACH TO MIDDLE EAST PEACE

(Waltham, January 23, 2007)- The content of former President Jimmy Carter's address to be held today at Brandeis University is of deep concern to the Jewish community of greater Boston.  While President Carter should be applauded for significant past contributions, his new book, Palestine Peace Not Apartheid, has many serious errors.  Moreover, his opinions do not reflect the reality of Israel's security concerns and longstanding commitment to peace.

Ken Stein, a fellow at the Carter Center, resigned last month, saying in a letter that the book was "replete with factual errors, copied materials not cited, superficialities, glaring omissions and simply invented segments."

Not long ago, Israel gave up all of Gaza, making painful sacrifices for peace. The response by the Palestinians has been to launch more than 1,200 rockets into Israeli civilian areas.

The Jewish community wants a better future for the Palestinians, but they have failed to consistently recognize Israel, to adhere to their past peace agreements and to renounce terrorism. Creating peace in the Middle East also requires that we pay attention to grave threats like the Iranian President who says he wants to wipe Israel off the map while Iran is developing nuclear weapons
