Celebration marks Israel independence

Thousands of people gathered at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro yesterday to support the celebration of Israel’s Independence Day, complete with a mock Jerusalem marketplace, camel rides, arts and crafts and traditional Israeli foods.

“The highlight, for me, of the day was seeing so many young families here enjoying themselves and having fun,” said Nancy Kaufman, executive director of Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston. “. . . Realizing Israel is not always the way it’s portrayed,” she added.

About 50 Palestinians, clad in all-black ensembles, protested the celebration.

The group held up two banners, one of which read, “Israeli Independence Equals Palestinian Dispossession.”
