JPost writer visits Boston
Etgar Lefkovits-Dallal, the Jerusalem Correspondent for the Jerusalem Post, spent a day in Boston last week during his eight day East Coast tour of the United States. Organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council's Israel Action Center and the Consulate of Israel to New England, Lefkovits-Dallal spoke at Boston University and Temple Israel of Natick on Oct. 2.
In his talks at BU, Lefkovits-Dallal detailed what it is like as a journalist to cover a suicide bombing, how to be neutral when covering a religious and societal issue, such as the gay parade in Jerusalem, and discussed the larger conflict between Hamas, Fatah, Israel and the countries of the Middle East.
"To be a true journalist," he said, "you have to show the human face of tragedy."
At Temple Israel, Lefkovits-Dallal was honored by the synagogue and the MetroWest Israel Advocacy Committee. He joined them in their sukkah, before giving a talk entitled, "The Rise of Islamic Extremism in the Palestinian Territories."
Lefkovits-Dallal acknowledged Iran's responsibility during the Second Lebanon War, and its relationship with Hezbollah. He also noted that this conflict extends beyond Israel and has become a regional issue.
In tune with Camp David's message, Lefkovits-Dallal highlighted the importance of educating the Palestinians in order to make strides towards peace.
"Education, education, education," he said. "They're teaching their kids and students starting at a young age that Israel does not exist. How can you achieve peace when Israel isn't even on the map?"
