Director of Government Affairs

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston (JCRC) is a coalition of organizations and individuals that represents and advances the values, interests, and priorities of the organized Jewish community in greater Boston. Through our network of agencies, our programs, and our partnerships, we:

  • Serve as a catalyst for building a strong and vibrant Jewish community in Boston and around the world;
  • Advocate for a safe, secure, Jewish, and democratic state of Israel, and;
  • Promote an American society which is democratic, pluralistic, and just.

Job Purpose:
The Director of Government Affairs is responsible for development and implementation of all public policy strategy of JCRC and the partner agencies of the statewide Jewish federations in consultation with Senior Staff, Volunteer Leadership and Advocacy Partners.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identify key issues of governmental concerns for Jewish community and human service agencies.
  • Develop and execute government affairs strategies for all state legislative activity and executive branch directives of importance to the JCRC / Jewish Community’s policy goals.
  • Consult with the Director of Community Engagement on policy matters on which to engage the Public Policy Committee (PPC), JCRC leaders, and/or broader community.
  • Establish a presence in the State House, build and sustain relationships with elected officials, to advance JCRC interests and prioritized policy goals
  • Oversee the work of the JCRC contract lobbyist.
  • Collaborate with and convene other lobbying entities within Jewish community as appropriate.
  • Prepare and disseminate information on statewide issues of concern, including action alerts and similar materials.
  • Act as liaison with the Jewish Federation of North America (JFNA) Washington, D.C. Office.
  • Represent JCRC and interests of organized Jewish community on select coalitions relating to policy priorities.
  • Collaborate with Director of Synagogue Organizing as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned within the broader scope of this position.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Five to seven years of legislative, regulatory, policy development, or advocacy experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience with problem identification in a member/constituent context and an enthusiasm for working with non-profit agencies to map operational challenges to policy changes
  • Demonstrated experience working as part of a collaborative team
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, or other directly applicable field of study

Preferred Requirements:

  • Seven to nine years of legislative, regulatory or advocacy experience, with experience managing internal and external staff and consultants.
  • Prior experience in state legislatures or relevant executive branch agencies preferred.
  • Post-secondary degree in law, public policy, public administration, or other directly applicable field preferred.

Required Skills:
Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to analyze complex policy and translate it to the broad public, keen political sense, interpersonal relationships; ability to work with external partners and lay leaders.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year

COVID-19 considerations:

The JCRC is currently working remotely while awaiting additional guidelines from the Commonwealth.  A complete plan for a return to the office is being produced.
