Chief Development Officer (CDO): Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Chief Development Officer (CDO) serves as a key member of the senior management team and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the JCRC. In partnership with the ED, this position is responsible for all fundraising, development, and strategic communications planning and activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build JCRC’s visibility, impact, brand recognition and reputation, and financial resources. The CDO will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow the JCRC budget through the solicitation of individual major gifts, grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. The CDO will expand and diversify JCRC’s base and develop a deeper pipeline of donors. The CDO will work closely with other team members to secure funding for existing and new initiatives and with the board of directors to support them as they take on a more active fundraising role. The CDO will work towards the goal of advancing JCRC’s position with relevant constituents and drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization.
Responsibilities
- Strategy, Vision, and Leadership:
- Develop and implement a plan, including a fundraising and messaging calendar, that strategically integrates development and communications to advance JCRC’s mission and vision; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and, increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.
- Fundraising & Communications:
- Conduct research, prospecting, and application to multiple donor sources; engage in direct solicitation of various levels of gifts, including major gifts, and manage staff and volunteer engagement in similar levels of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship; develop and manage campaigns, engaging and overseeing staff and volunteers in reaching goals; oversee strategy and implementation of all fundraising events, ranging from small house meetings to major fundraisers.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop organizationally consistency communications; work with staff to identify significant media and public policy issues that can leverage JCRC’s work, and create and implement plans to publicly message and fundraise around them; oversee organizational response to inquiries.
- Collaboration:
- Support and partner with the Executive Director and Board on major fundraising initiatives; collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to develop and implement JCRC’s financial strategy; actively work with senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate, foundation, government grants, etc.; engage staff in communicating meaningful stories from our programs.
- Oversight and Reporting:
- Have primary oversight of development and execution of all grant proposals, ensuring quality submissions, with a long-term relationship-management approach; monitor the development field to position JCRC ahead of major funding changes or trends; develop aggregate donor information and statistical analysis of donations; oversee development of all JCRC materials, including the annual report, marketing materials, and electronic communications including the website and social media; supervise governance strategies and planning; work with staff and volunteers to implement the priorities of the committee, and report to Board and staff leadership.
- Management:
- Responsible for day-to-day activities of the development and communications functions including budgeting, planning and staff development; mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis; establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and conduct annual performance appraisals.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).
- Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of constituencies and build long-term relationships.
- Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical institutional advancement initiatives; management and supervision experience to grow a team of professionals.
- Should be a strategic thinker and planner, with experience in events, direct fundraising, grant proposal submissions, communications planning, and project management.
- Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside JCRC
- Other duties as required. Some nights and Sundays are required.
