An Evening Celebrating 20 Years of GBJCL Volunteers

Thursday, November 30 at Temple Beth Shalom, Needham
670 Highland Ave, Needham, MA 02494

Featured Speaker Susan E. Goodman

Susan E. Goodman’s books have taken her down the Amazon River, up near the North Pole and right into the path of a startled moose. Her 39 books include ALA Notable All in Just One Cookie and On This Spot, one of The Washington Post’s Top Five Picture Books of its year. Goodman’s latest, The First Step: How One Girl Put Segregation on Trial, was named a Jane Addams Peace Association Honor Book, an Orbis Pictus Honor Book, a Teachers’ Choice Pick by the International Literacy Association, and a Junior Library Guild Selection among others.

Goodman also teaches children’s book writing at Lesley University’s low-residency MFA program in Cambridge, MA.

Bring Books to Life: How to Hook Kids into Reading

Readers, even challenged ones, will work very hard to get to the next page of a book that interests them.  Goodman has spent her career learning how to engage young readers. In this talk, she will adapt some of her approaches so tutors can use them too.

We are pleased to be joined by State Representative Denise Garlick (Needham).
