We are grateful to the more than 400 people who attended the Community Holocaust Commemoration of Yom HaShoah on Sunday May 1st in Boston’s Faneuil Hall–including Holocaust survivors, liberators, Consul General of Israel Yehuda Yaakov, Deputy Consul General of Germany Helmut Landes, and featured survivor speaker Eva Fleischman Paddock.
“…People will come together to commemorate their move from darkness to light. To resolve in their names never again, we will never forget, we will not be silent whenever people suffer.”
Guest speaker and survivor Eva Fleischman Paddock, one of the 669 children saved by Sir Nicholas Winton ( “Britain’s Schindler”) from Czechoslovakia in 1939.
The Community Holocaust Commemoration of Yom HaShoah was presented in partnership with the American Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants of Greater Boston, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, Facing History and Ourselves, Jewish Family & Children’s Services, 3G, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
The ceremony also included the presentation of the inaugural
Leadership in Holocaust Education Award to Mary Beth Donovan,
Principal at Tenney Grammar School in Methuen, MA. Determined to teach the real Holocaust history to her students, she invited Israel Arbeiter, Holocaust survivor, to speak to her class about his experience. His story of struggle and survival changed her life, as well as those of her students.

The Israel Arbeiter Holocaust Essay Contest has been an important part of the curriculum ever since and now engages students in thoughtful reflection on lessons from the Holocaust all over Greater Boston.
